Roy DeCarava: Sagittarius Sun/Cancer Moon

1.jpg

Roy DeCarava was a Sagittarius Sun & Cancer Moon, like today’s astrology. DeCarava grew up with the Harlem Renaissance and made prints for the WPA. He took pictures of his neighborhood and black life in Harlem, where he was from and where he lived throughout his life.

Staying close to home and taking pictures of his neighborhood & home is very Cancer moon—an emotional connection to home and roots. Sharing them with the world, and having the pictures extend past Harlem and into a larger experience is very Sagittarius. He also founded the Kamoinge Workshop, a Harlem-based collective supporting the work of black photographers—again staying close to home but expanding awareness of other black photographers and their work. (That Sag/Cancer combo).

Of course the asteroid Daguerre is conjunct his Sun and opposite his Moon & the asteroid Niepce is conjunct his Moon and opposite his Sun. This solidifies his life in & huge contributions to photography, his legacy as the first African American to win a Guggenheim fellowship, his inclusion in the Family of Man exhibit & his National Medal of Arts from the NEA. These asteroid placements suggest he was born to have a huge place in the history of photography.
